Choosing to work with small and medium-sized nonprofits has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made as a grant writer. It’s deeply fulfilling to know that my work can have a significant and lasting impact on these organizations’ long-term prospects. I’ve honed my specialization to focus on two crucial stages in the life cycle of nonprofits – the very beginning and that critical point when they are poised to transition into major players in the field.
For young nonprofits, the early stages are often marked by the need to establish efficient, effective operational systems while creatively securing funding. Unlike more established organizations with years of financial history and service data to share, these fledgling nonprofits must rely on their vision, mission, and a compelling plan for the future. This is where grant writing takes on added importance. I work closely with these organizations to craft proposals that showcase their brilliant proof of concept and the dedication and expertise of their teams. It’s all about effectively communicating their potential and charting a clear path forward.
Once a nonprofit has taken root and built the necessary infrastructure, institutional knowledge, and long-term relationships with funders, it’s time to explore new horizons! This is another stage I’m passionate about. It requires outside the box thinking and experience to identify funding sources that might be considered riskier bets but have the potential for substantial payoffs. At this stage, it’s about bridging the gap between current and future results. This is where my skills in proposal writing come into play, helping nonprofits secure the resources needed to catalyze their growth.
At Ursa Minor, our ultimate goal is to see each fledgling client achieve stability and each medium-sized client elevate their programming impact to where they can truly say that they are meeting all or most of the need. We support these soon-to-be superstars until they reach the point where they can hire a full-time development professional who will guide them through the next stage of their journey. Our clients do amazing work and we’re thrilled that through our efforts, we can play our small part in making the Hudson Valley a better place for everyone who calls it home.
